VPSA Oxygen Generation Process: Applied to Glass Fiber Oxyfuel Combustion for Energy Saving and Emission Reduction

On July 28, 2022, PKU Pioneer attended the 2022 Annual Academic Conference of the Glass Fiber Branch of China Silicate Society and discussed in depth with more than 400 upstream and downstream representatives from the glass fiber & composites industry on the development trend, technical research, and innovative applications of the glass fiber industry in the context of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.


The heat required for melting during the production method of glass fiber kiln wire drawing is provided by fuel combustion. Conventional air combustion is to use 21% oxygen in the air to boost combustion while about 78% nitrogen in the air reacts with oxygen at high temperatures, producing a large amount of hazardous NOX and taking away part of the heat. As a result, the thermal efficiency of air combustion is lower, and energy is wasted with great pollution to the air. The density of oxygen in the combustion-supporting gas is the key to improving combustion efficiency. Mixing oxygen of ≥91% purity with fuel in a certain proportion can save over 30% of fuel compared with air-assisted combustion technology, with higher flame temperature, faster heat transfer, higher combustion efficiency, lower exhaust gas emission and other excellent features on energy saving and environmental protection.


In practical production, most Chinese glass fiber enterprises require oxygen purity of >93% with continuous stability of oxygen volume and purity as the key to production. Considering the higher cost of liquid oxygen, most glass fiber production lines resort to building their own oxygen stations to ensure the oxygen supply, meanwhile, liquid oxygen storage tanks are set up in the factory as a backup, so that oxygen can still be supplied to the furnace during the maintenance or failure of the oxygen station.


The oxygen consumption for glass fiber production line is generally less than 4000Nm³/h. In view of the technical and economic costs, oxygen generation by VPSA process is the optimal solution for glass fiber enterprises.
